New Canine Vaccine
We have recently started using a brand new range of dog vaccines that offer increased protection against, among other things, Leptospirosis. This is a new vaccine, released in August this year. It is known as an L4 vaccine, offering 2 extra serotypes of leptospirosis above the old 2 serotype L2 vaccines. However, of the new serotypes in this vaccine, one is rare in this country, and the other occurs mostly on the continent. Whilst it could be argued that UK pets may not benefit significantly from this vaccine, it will offer extra protection for our patients who regularly travel backwards and forwards to Europe, and there is no telling if or when these serotypes may be more common here.Other benefits of this vaccine include a Parvovirus component more closely related to the field strains.
This extra protection will involve a second dose of L4 vaccine having to be administered 3-4 weeks after your dog's annual booster. This second dose will be provided free of charge by the vaccine company. It is not necessary to bring forward or in any way alter the timing of your dog's annual vaccination. We will pick up pets that require this second dose at the normal time for their annual booster over the next 12 months.
